September 2008 - Susan Yager
"Pottery Gone Soft"
|
 |
| The “soft slab” technique allows
Susan Yager
to use flowing lines, tucks and twists in unexpected ways. It can be pillowy, slouched, sensuous or even humorous. Starting with a formless
lump she creates a work of art with both function and beauty.

July 2008 - Bill Hobler
"Capturing the Light"
|
|
 |
|
Morning Light
Early morning light across Hampton harbor illuminates two faces
of that city. The Air and Space Museum points toward
a high technology future. The rusting fishing boat
harks back to the long history of fishing from Hampton. |
A romantic at heart, Bill Hobler’s watercolors are filled with light.
He enjoys painting from poetry, capturing the mood of the poem or
of his subject. Bill studied drawing and watercolor at
the Alexandria Art League School. He has been a juried member
of Blue Skies Gallery since 2002.
Hobler says about his painting,
"I
believe in expressing more than beauty or ugliness through my
work. Beyond either of these is its meaning in my
and my viewer's lives. The brilliant colors of homes
in Burano, Italy express the individualism of the people. They comment on the confined culture of many American neighbors
who would be shocked if a house on their street were painted a
bright red."

May 2008- Jean Harrison
"Fabricating Beauty" |
|
Blue Skies Gallery is pleased to announce our featured
artist for the month of May, 2008. Textile artist, Jean Harrison,
fabricates beauty in her intricate and colorful works of art. |
 |
|
Jean is a self-taught artist,
who works out of instinct, with the fabric and embellishment
dictating what the piece, a purse, clothing, or
wall hanging, will be. Her wall pieces are
usually theme-based or sewn in an improvisational manner, creating a
work in progress. The outcome is often surprising and fun for her.
Working out of a bedroom studio,
Jean resides in Williamsburg with husband, who is constantly hopping
around pins and needles and thread on the floor, a fact of life with
a fiber artist.
Jean has exhibited at Blue
Skies Gallery, This Century, Red Thread Studio, Charles H. Taylor Fine
Arts Center, and Peninsula Fine Arts Center and won many ribbons for
her work.
