Kathryn seeks to create visual poetry in which the viewer brings his or her own thoughts and feelings to the experience of the work. Her work melds modern digital photography with the ancient medium of encaustic painting. Encaustic means, literally, “to burn in.” It consists of beeswax with a small amount of damar resin. Once Kathryn has adhered her original photograph to clay board or wood, she melts the encaustic medium and paints it over the entire piece using a brush, a hot air gun and a specialized iron to move the wax around and thin it or thicken it to achieve the look she is after. She usually adds highlights with hand-rubbed powdered pigment and sometimes uses pre-colored encaustic medium.
