Newport News native and Hampton resident, Jerry Gammon, combines and interest in photography and impressionistic art to create his uniquely styled “photographic paintings”.  Each of his works starts with an original Polaroid SX-70 photograph.  He hand alters the original to blend colors and give the picture texture and depth.

Since learning the craft in 1995, Gammon has produced over 1500 titles.  His subjects include the historic sites of Hampton, Newport News, and Fort Monroe, plus angels, fish, flags, flowers, and other whimsical images.  He also has a vast collection of local and national lighthouses.

It should be noted that his craft is now considered a “lost art” as Polaroid stopped production of the SX-70 film in March 2006.  Gammon believes that this is the first time an art form ceased to exist because its raw materials became extinct.

Gammon has been an exhibiting member of Blue Skies Gallery in downtown Hampton since 1996.  You may also view many of his works at: www.gammongallery.com

Polaroid Image Manipulation is the technique that gives Polaroid SX-70 Time Zero photographs a "painting-like" look and feel. The process starts with an original Polaroid SX-70 photograph. While the emulsions that make up the image are still fluid, Jerry Gammon hand-alters the Polaroid with blunt instruments, blending colors and creating texture and depth. Prints are reproduced from the original Polaroid by laser copier, or by making a photographic negative or digital image.
